The Billionaire Looks Back by Christie Logan

A famous athlete turned billionaire. The woman he loved and left behind. When they meet again, will sparks re-ignite? Or will a long-kept secret tear them apart forever?

Billionaire football star Shawn Canaday may seem like every woman’s dream, but his reappearance in Applewood, New York makes him Marg Hahn’s worst nightmare.

She fell for him once, before fame and ambition became more important to him than love, and she has the evidence to prove it—Lauren, their twenty-four-year-old daughter. Marg soldiered on as a single mother, raising her child on her own while keeping Shawn in the dark. She didn’t want to hold him back from all he hoped to achieve.

Now guilt and a promise to an old friend bring him back to town, where he and Marg reconnect. When they find themselves stranded together, they discover their love never died.

But he still doesn’t know about Lauren. When he learns the truth, will they at last be a family? Or will he turn his back on Marg for good?

Excerpt

She and Shawn had met the summer between his prep school graduation and his first year of college. He’d already secured his college scholarship and was spending time at home with his parents. Marg had a summer job serving cones, sundaes and milkshakes at the local ice cream stand.
“What are you talking about?” He asked. “I noticed you right away. There you were, all business behind the window, asking to take my order and I blanked. Stood there like a fool, completely forgetting what I wanted.”
“You ordered a large chocolate cone,” Marg answered.
“You remember that? All I remember was how cute you were in your little Dairy Maid outfit, and how much I wanted to get you to go out with me.”
“Oh, that outfit.” She shuddered. “So ugly. I hated it.”
“Nah. You rocked that thing. And I hung around till closing, hoping to talk to you.”
“When you found out I was walking home, you offered to drive me. And I let you. My mom would have killed me if she knew I accepted a ride from a strange boy.” She smiled. “You weren’t exactly a stranger, though.”
“No?”
“No. I knew who you were. You were pretty famous around town. Local hero. Kid from humble means with the whole world in the palm of his hand…” Marg’s voice trailed off.
Where had she heard those words before? Then she remembered. Shawn’s own father had spoken them back in the day.
“Right now Shawn has the whole world in the palm of his hand. How are you going to live with yourself if you take that away from him?”
Shawn didn’t seem to notice she’d drifted off into her thoughts. “I’m glad you took the chance with me. It was a great summer.”
Marg stiffened. A great summer. That’s all it was, for him. A little fling to enjoy, fun while it lasted, easy to forget. She was the only one who had to deal with the consequences.
A chill crept through her. The closeness and camaraderie she’d felt just moments ago drained away, leaving her empty.
He must have picked up on her change of mood. “I’m sorry,” he said. “That was a clumsy way to phrase it.”
“Forget it,” she answered, turning her face away. She stood and descended the stairs. “Have you finished your tea? I’ll take the cups back to the kitchen.”
“Sure.” His voice was tentative, but she refused to look at him. It wasn’t her job to manage his emotions. “I, uh, I wanted to take a look around the basement. I’ll do that now.”
As she rinsed out the cups in the sink, Marg second-guessed herself. Yes, the romance had left her with consequences: Lauren. It had been tough trying to juggle an education, job, and childcare, but she’d managed. And she had a beautiful daughter to love. In the end, Marg knew she was the lucky one.

Star Spangled Second Chance by Christie Logan

They were best friends before he left town without a word. Now he’s back. Will her heart be broken again?

Good girl Portia Phillips always followed the rules, colored inside the lines and walked the straight and narrow. Only her best friend Raymond Alessio could ever get her to quit being “perfect Portia” for a minute and take a risk.

Portia fell in love with Raymond way back in fourth grade. That love only grew stronger as years passed, but she kept it hidden, until one Fourth of July when she finally had the courage to share her feelings.

That was the night he broke her heart. Since then she’s kept it safe, under lock and key.

Now, eight years later, he’s back in town with his young daughter. His life’s a mess, but his love for Portia never changed. Can Raymond convince her to give him another chance? Will Portia find the courage to risk her heart a second time?

EXCERPT

Excerpt 1:
A sharp cry followed by a high-pitched wail jerked Portia out of her reverie. Underneath the monkey bars, Serena was helping the blonde child up from the ground. The little girl cried loudly as Serena propped her up with an arm around her shoulder.
“Oh, no.” Portia rushed over to them. The little blonde’s face was bright red, her face streaked with tears. “Sweetie, are you all right?”
“Her name’s Lily. I know her from the afterschool program.” Serena looked stricken. “We were just playing, and she fell.”
“It’s not your fault, Serena.” Portia looked the other child up and down and saw no blood. “Did you hurt yourself, Lily?”
“I want my dad!” The child wailed. “Where’s my daddy?”
“Okay, honey. We’ll find him.” Portia quickly scanned the area. Her gaze flew past the faces of a few adults who had stopped to stare at the spectacle, but no one came forward.
Suddenly a man’s voice sounded behind her. “Lily!”
Portia turned toward the sound and froze. Her heartbeat thudded to a crawl and her tongue glued itself to the roof of her mouth as the man raced toward them.
For an instant, his eyes connected with Portia’s as he swept by her to comfort the little girl. His child.
Suddenly everything around Portia went blurry, as though she were seeing the world through a smear of gel. What kind of crazy hand had fate dealt her, bringing her face to face with Raymond Alessio, after all this time? Here, where she first fell in love with him—and where he later broke her heart.

Excerpt 2:
Portia stood with Raymond on Lake Verona’s shore and looked out at the smooth surface of the water. “Remember the last time we were here?” he asked.

“Sure I do. You showed me how to skip stones.” She picked up one of the small stones at her feet and flung it out, frowning as it landed with an ungainly plop. “Guess I lost the knack.”

“It wasn’t flat enough.” Raymond selected another stone and handed it to her. “Try this one.”

As she pulled back her arm to fling the stone, he stepped behind her and gently held her arm to guide her aim. “This way. And don’t forget the little flick of the wrist just before you let go.”

His touch made her feel warm and safe. Protected. She wanted to sink into his arms even though her brain told her to watch her step.

With Raymond guiding her she tossed the stone, adding the wrist flick, and watched it skim the water’s surface one, two, three times before disappearing.

She laughed in delight and cried, “Did you see that?” Turning in his arms, she expected to find him grinning back at her. Instead his face was serious. Her smile faded as she gazed up at him. “Raymond?”

His arms closed around her and pulled her toward him.

This sweet, clean, contemporary romance is well written. I love the way the author used flashbacks to fill in the history of the couples previous relationship and things that happened to it. The characters are so likable. I look forward to reading the rest of the Holidays in Applewood series.

Wow, what a second chance story!

If you love this genre this is a must read

The Charming Life of Izzy Malone by Jenny Lundquist-book blasts + giveaway

the-charming-life-of-izzy-maloneThe Charming Life of Izzy Malone by Jenny Lundquist

Izzy Malone isn’t your typical sixth grader. She wears camouflage combat boots and tie dye skirts; the Big Dipper and Orion are her two best friends; and she’d rather climb trees or shoot hoops than talk about boys and makeup. And after only a month of middle school she’s already set the record for the most trips to the Principal’s office.

The only time Izzy feels at peace is when she’s on the open water, and more than anything else, she wants to become a member of the Dandelion Paddlers, her school’s competitive rowing club. But thanks to those multiple trips to the Principal’s office, Izzy’s parents force her to enroll in Mrs. Whippie’s CharmSchool, a home-study course in manners and etiquette, or they won’t let her race in Dandelion Hollow’s annual pumpkin regatta—where Izzy hopes to prove to the Dandelion Paddlers she is more than qualified to be on their team.

When Mrs. Whippie’s first letter arrives it’s way different from what Izzy was expecting. Tucked inside the letter is a shiny gold bracelet and an envelope charm. Izzy must earn her first charm by writing someone a nice note, and once she does more tasks will be assigned.

Izzy manages to complete some of the tasks—and to her surprise, she actually finds herself enjoying the course. But when one of her attempts at doing something good is misinterpreted, she fears her chances at passing the course—and becoming a Paddler—are slipping away. With some unexpected friends there to support her, can Izzy manage to earn her charms and stay true to herself?

Coco grunted and stuck a pumpkin on her bookcase. “Consider yourself lucky. The only reason you’re not in Principal Chilton’s office right now is because Ms. Harmer decided stealing keys is a bigger offense than climbing trees…And how many more times am I going to have to tell you not to put your feet up on my desk?”
“I don’t know,” I said. “How many more times do you think I’ll get sent to your office?”
“That’s a mystery to me. You’ve only been here a month and I think you already hold the school record. It’s been—What?—two days since I last saw you? When you kicked Tyler Jones in the shin.”
“That was totally not my fault. Tyler called me a weirdo and a waste of space.”
“‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names can never hurt me.’ It’s a saying,” Coco said. “Ever heard of it?”
“You know what? Now that you mention it, I think I have!” I nearly sprained my eyeballs; I was trying so hard not to roll them. Words are a weapon, and rotten kids like Tyler Jones get a free pass when it comes to using them, because the marks they leave are invisible. Why don’t more adults realize that?

Excerpt 1:

She leaned against the counter and began filling them out. “How much do I owe you?” She asked.

“Dinner,” he replied.

She looked up at him with a raised brow. “Excuse me?”

“You owe me the dinner you promised me ten years ago, with interest I’d say you owe me somewhere around one hundred dinners.” He put his elbows on the counter between them and leaned towards her, bringing their faces close together. “I’m free Friday if you want to start chipping away at that debt.” He tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

She stood up straight and pushed the completed forms toward him. “That should do it.” She gathered up her purse and keys she had set on the counter. “I’ll thank you now for the puppy because at two in the morning when it has me up with its whining and howling, I will be anything but thankful. In fact, I will probably be cursing you.”

She smiled, but it didn’t quite have the same flash as before, and he felt a web of disappointment she hadn’t responded the way he wanted her to. But he wasn’t planning on giving up that easily. “You’re welcome. And if you need any help at two in the morning or just want the satisfaction of knowing I’m not getting any sleep either, call me.”

“I just might do that. See you around, Zack.”

“Sure thing,” he said as she walked through the door.

She stopped, turned around, and leaned against the door jam. A smile touched the corners of her lips. “Dinner’s at seven. Don’t be late.”

Excerpt 2:

The girls ran off. Zack and Diana were left looking at each other. Neither spoke.

“I think I’ll move to a safer area before I get singed by the fireworks,” Jen said.

They turned to look at her. Both had forgotten she was there. “There aren’t any fireworks, Jen,” Diana said, confused.

“Sure there are, hon. You just haven’t seen them yet.” She patted Diana’s arm and walked away.

***

Diana felt her face get hot as understanding dawned. “She didn’t mean us, did she?”

“Afraid so.” Zack’s lips twitched with barely contained amusement. “If you wanted to ask me out you didn’t have to set the girls up to do it,” he teased.

“I seem to remember you asking me to dinner,” Diana said. Did the man eat testosterone for breakfast? He looked delicious. His khaki shorts made his tan legs look lean and muscular, and with a red, button-down shirt and brown leather sandals, he looked like he was ready for a walk on the beach.

“So how did I end up at your house with you making me dinner?” He winked at her.

Touché,” Diana said.

“However, you do have the set up part right. But it wasn’t me. It was Jillian who got the girls to set us up on a date.”

“Oh.” She suddenly felt deflated. “You don’t have to go. I can take them. I’m sure you have better things to do with your Saturday night.”

“Better than taking the three prettiest girls in town to a movie? Not a chance. Cassidy and I will pick you both up at six.”

“You do realize it will be me going, not Liz?”

“Of course,” he said, confusion marring his brow.

“You said prettiest, I thought you meant Liz,” Diana said.  He stopped walking and looked over at her. She found it hard to hold his gaze. She hated feeling vulnerable, being compared to Liz had always made her feel that way. Slowly he cupped her cheek. “I was talking about you. It’s always been you, never Liz. Got it?”

Had she ever seen that intense look in his eyes? She nodded. Message received all the way down to her toes. Jen had been right. There were fireworks, and she’d just gotten singed.

Excerpt 3:

Diana was losing her patience. “What do you want, Liz?”

Liz didn’t say a thing, all Diana heard was a small sob come over the line. Her heart lurched. “Liz, what’s wrong?”

“It’s mom and dad.” Her voice had become soft. She was speaking past an obvious lump in her throat. “Their plane crashed off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard. They’re dead.” The sob coming over the phone felt like a punch in her gut.

Diana’s legs gave out, and she fell into her chair. Her own voice sounded far away as she heard herself ask, “Are you sure?”

“Yes. Dad was flying them out. They were going to spend a week celebrating their anniversary.” Their father had recently gotten his private pilot’s license. It was his latest hobby. “Was Jessica with them?” Diana held her breath as she waited for the answer.

“No. She’s with me. I was taking care of her while they were gone.”

Diana let out a sigh of relief, only to have it replaced by a wedge of pain lodge itself into her heart.

“Where are you?” Diana choked out.

“We’re at home. In Magnolia Falls.”

“I’ll get there as fast as I can,” Diana said.

“Today?”

“Yes. I’ll be there today.”

“Diana, please hurry. We need you,” Liz said, tearfully.

“I’m on my way.”

She heard the click of Liz hanging up yet she still sat with the phone to her ear, staring straight ahead, seeing only images of her father’s laughing face and her mother’s soft, patient smile. She was never going to see them again. The phone slid from her hand and clattered onto the floor. She covered her face with her hands and wept. Heart-wrenching sobs wracked her body, tears streamed down her face and through her fingers. If she cried like this for the rest of her life, there wouldn’t be enough tears to drown her grief. After twenty minutes of giving in to her pain she pulled herself together.

Excerpt 4:

After dinner Zack took her to the falls. There was a long bridge crossing the water. They used to go there all the time as kids. That bridge was where Zack had asked her to Prom. The sound of water falling into the pool of water surrounded them. The moonlight reflected off the water. The night was slightly cool. Zack held her hand as they walked across the bridge. “Do you remember coming here during the summer? We would spend all day in the water,” said Zack.

“What I remember was my preteen antics to get you to notice me.” Diana almost winced remembering all her crazy antics.

“Oh, I noticed, but you were my sister’s best friend. My twin sister. I would have violated the twin code.”

“The twin code, huh. I’ve never heard of it.”

“That’s because only twins know what the twin code is.”

“Right. You know what I think Mr. Connelly? I think the twin code is non-existent.”

There was a breeze, and Diana shivered. Zack stopped them in the center of the bridge. He wrapped his arms around her. “Better?” He asked. Always the gentleman.

“Much,” Diana said. She laid her head on his chest and listened to the steady beat of his heart. In Zack’s arms she could almost forget all the pain and loss she had experienced. He made things right in a world that had gone so very wrong.

“Diana,” he said her name softly as his hand stroked up and down her back.

She lifted her head to look into his eyes. “Yes.”

“Today. That kiss. I’ve been waiting a long time to do that. Now that I have, I don’t think I ever want to stop.” He lowered his head to hers slowly, looking into her eyes. Giving her time to stop him. She leaned up on her tiptoes and met him halfway. When their lips met, it was with tenderness and love cultivated over a lifetime of friendship and shared experiences. This kiss was between two hearts that had long yearned for this very moment. The moment when two hearts would become forever linked as one.

Excerpt 5

He handed her a glass of red wine then busied himself at the stove with dinner. Diana watched him as she slowly sipped the wine. She enjoyed watching the muscles on his back stretch the fabric of his shirt when he bent over. A perusal of the view further down was even better.

He closed the oven, turned, and looked at her. A smile played on his lips as he slowly walked to her. He had caught her staring at his very sexy backside. “Miss Mathison, I do believe you were checking me out,” he said.

She held his piercing gaze. “And what if I was?”

He wrapped his arms loosely around her waist. “I have absolutely no objections. However, I’d say that entitles me to at least a kiss.”

“That sounds like a fair trade.” She wrapped her arms around his neck. He leaned down and captured her lips in a slow, teasing kiss meant to set her on fire. She was certain that was his goal because she felt herself being slowly consumed by heat only Zack could evoke in her. If he could do this to her with a kiss, she was afraid of what would happen if he made love to her. She’d probably go up in flames leaving a pile of ashes in his bed. That thought made her smile, almost making her laugh.

“Do you find my kisses laughable?” He asked.

“Not even remotely,” she said.

“Dare I ask why you were smiling when I was kissing you?”

She shook her head. “Believe me, you don’t want to know—well, maybe you would. But I’m not telling.”

“Ah, so it was something good. A fantasy that included me perhaps?”

Just then the timer on the oven began beeping. “Saved by the bell,” she said, lifting her glass of wine to her lips.

He shut off the timer and pulled dinner out of the oven and set it on the counter. “You aren’t getting off that easy. I’ll find out. Question is, should I use bribery or coercion?” He asked.

“Go for bribery,” she replied, outrageously.

“In that case—” He lifted a small bite of filet mignon to her lips with his fingers. She took the bite he offered, it tasted better than anything she ever had, possibly because it also had a taste of Zack.

“That is delicious. Anymore of that and you’ll soon have me revealing all my thoughts to you.”

“I want to know your thoughts, especially if they include me. I want to know what’s in your heart, particularly if there is a place for me. Because my thoughts and my heart are filled with you. Only you. Always you.”

Praise for the Series:

“I did not see that ending coming! Gracie is not what I expected either…she doesn’t fit the mold of what you think an “angel-in-training” is supposed to be like, and it will be fun to see her continue to learn and change. I love her mentor, Gertrude! It is a fun, clean romance that keeps you interested and entertained. Eagerly anticipating the next one in the series!” by Verified Amazon Customer

“Love this series! Nash’s desire to save his father’s ranch touched me. And it helped he’s hot and swoon worthy! And Gracie’s love story with the ‘bad boy’ makes it even more interesting! Love this! Don’t miss it!” Always Reading

Excerpt From Heart of the Billionaire (Book 2 in The Almost an Angel Series)
Stewart Matthews sat poised on the edge of his seat, his body taut—his face wearing the laser-beam focus of a General preparing for battle. In many ways, he was fighting the greatest battle of his life, for it involved the heart of the one he loved the most.
He could only see one way to help Brooke, but she wouldn’t like it. In fact, she would be so angry that she might never speak to him again. That was the price he would have to pay for attempting to save her. Better to be a parent than a friend. Even though he dreaded what was to come, he knew there was no other option. His money had been the thing that sent Brooke down her path of self-destruction. He could only hope that it would also be the catalyst that would save her
A feeling of resignation settled over him as he looked down at the blank page. Then he picked up the pen and began to write …
My Darling Brooke,
From the moment you were born and I held you in my arms, I knew that my life would never again be the same. Never before had I experienced such pure and complete love. And that love has only grown and multiplied over the years. You are my heart, my primary responsibility, and I will take any measures necessary to protect you, even if that means protecting you from yourself.
Sweetheart, my only desire is that you find joy and contentment—the kind that can only come from within. You need to learn to love unconditionally and to love someone so completely that you are willing to put his needs before your own. Please know that I have spent many a night, walking the floors, trying to determine the best course of action to set you back on the right path.
A way has been opened up, and I intend to take full advantage of it. My only hope is that you will one day find it in your heart to forgive me, for what I’m about to do.
A knock sounded. He looked up as his assistant stuck her head in the door. “I’m sorry to disturb you, but the attorney is here and waiting in the conference room. It’s time.”
The moment of truth was here. Once he signed the documents, there would be no going back. He blew out a breath, a rigid look of determination on his lined face. “Tell them I’ll be there in five minutes.”

Excerpt

“Mason, MASON, MASON!” Skylar panicked.

“I know. Skylar, hold on tight. I’m going to brake.”

“But there are cars behind us.”

“We have no choice. Don’t worry. I got this.” Mason pushed down on the brake forcefully. The car hydroplaned to the right. “Hold on.”

Skylar gripped the first thing her hand found. The water from the road jetted up into the air like in a water show, but the car kept gliding sideways, until finally it spun in a full circle and stopped. With no time to waste, Mason turned it to the right and accelerated, hoping to dodge what was coming toward them.

Out of nowhere, a long piece of ice, taking the form of a spear, darted through the trucks’ tires and punctured some of them. More ice spears came soaring out of the rain, but this time ten or more sphere-like ice balls followed, denting the sides of the trucks. One went through a windshield. With flat tires, the trucks now glided as if skating on ice, maneuvering from side to side.

“Did you do that?” Skylar asked excitedly.

“No. Must be Poseidon’s kids. Where the hell are they?” Mason spread his right arm out in front of Skylar as if to protect her. “Bend down, Sky.”

One of the trucks hit another and veered off, hitting yet another one. The crash caused the trucks to flip and tumble, heading straight for Mason’s car. With a look of shock, Skylar held her breath. There was no time to move, think, or get out of the car, so she closed her eyes and prepared for the crash.

Seconds before impact, Mason’s car flew up into the air and over the trucks. Somehow, as if by magic, the water created a liquid bridge, guiding the car safely over, and then it thumped hard onto the ground on the other side. Without looking back, Mason sped away as the sound of screeching brakes and metal hitting metal blasted behind them.

Excerpt:
In this scene, Gretchen learns that Kian has a secret dream to be a carriage driver on the island. She has a dream of her own and knows the power of them, so she is determined to help him achieve his goal.

“It was a stupid dream. I should sell it, ta pay ya.” Kian jerked the covering into place and turned away.
“Nein. No.” She followed him. “Dream is not stupid. Dream is good.”
She slowed down to hit the correct sound at the end. Just so he understood.
He yanked pieces of oak from the pile near the door and dropped them into her pail.
“I help you vith your dream.” She pulled out the bigger pieces and returned them to the stack before tugging the handle from his grip. Selecting the right size for the cook stove, she filled her bucket. “You see.”
“Why?” He stared at the wood pile and huddled in his jacket.
She didn’t want to think too hard about the why. Instead, she clasped the pail to her chest and hustled for the door.
He beat her there and pushed back the snow, so she could squeeze through the opening. Before she exited, he stayed her with a hand on her arm. “Why?”
“Because I have the dreams, too. And you are helping to make them true.” She ducked under his arm and walked into the cold. More than he knew. Maybe more than was safe for her heart.

He paused for a moment. His intense gaze had me feeling undone. “Are you happy, Kenadie?”
“That’s a complicated question.”
“Well, you are a complicated woman.”
“I don’t try to be.”
“It was a compliment.”
“How do you do that?”
“What’s that?”
“You always know what to say to make me feel better about myself.”
“Well, that’s easy. You give me good material to work with.”
“Jason … Today, I’m happy.”
“You don’t know how happy I am to hear that,” he said smoothly.

Kate found Jason asleep on the porch swing again. Her drive had left her drained, without answers and somewhat resigned. As she looked down at him sleeping, still, the only thing she really knew was that she loved him. Loved him dearly. In spite of everything.
When it came right down to it, that was what made her happy. She wished there was a way to separate this crushing heartache from the sweet peace she felt when she was with him. Who knows, maybe she could get really good at ignoring the parts of his life she didn’t understand. She sat down on the edge of the swing and touched his beautiful hair.
His eyes opened slowly and this time there wasn’t a smile, but there was a sweet, sincere tenderness as he quietly watched her for a few seconds. She stroked his cheek and then ran a finger over his sensuous bottom lip. Even if he wasn’t perfectly trustworthy, he was definitely beautiful. She kissed the tip of her finger and put it back there on his lip and said softly, “Wake up, sleepy head. You’re gonna get a million ‘squito bites out here.”
He sat up and reached out to touch her cheek. “I’ll live. How was Texas?”
She sat down beside him. “Still big.”
He smiled sadly, “I told Cody you’d driven to Texas to talk to God. He said he didn’t even realize God lived there. He’s decided that’s why Texans are egotistical.”
She laughed. “That’s exactly what I needed just now. Laughing feels good. I thought I didn’t get to see you until tomorrow? What brings you tonight?”
He groaned and made a sound of disgust. “Ah, I Googled myself. It was awful.”
She pushed the porch swing with her foot. “I know.”
“I’m not really as bad as it looks. I swear.”
“I know.”
